Being a security guard can be difficult, but it can also be an enjoyable and rewarding career choice. There are a number of things which you can do to ensure that you’re in the best possible position to be offered a job within the security industry. Here are a few tips:
- Obtain an SIA (Security Industry Authority) qualification. If you’re carrying out security for a current employer, you might not need one, but to work externally or take on agency work this kind of certificate is essential. You will need to study for and pass exams within a number of different modules. Study options are flexible and you can learn during evenings and weekends if you need to.
- Consider the kinds of jobs you’d like to do. You can work in door security, event security, as a personal bodyguard and many other areas. Some people may choose to work through an agency to gain more varied experience.
- If you choose to work for a particular company, make sure they’re reputable. Working for a good company is a great opportunity to receive in-house training and get your security career off to a flying start. They may be willing to help you take further qualifications which can be a great financial help.
- Work on your other skills. You’ll often need to be personable and friendly as aspects of your job will include interacting with people and answering their questions. You’ll also be required to have a good level of written English in order to write reports and fill in forms about incidents which may be used by the police.
- Do plenty of research. The more you know about the security profession the more likely you are to land yourself a job in the industry.
