The security guarding industry operates in lots of different fields. Security guards are often specialists in one particular area, though many will also have experience in a range of sectors. It makes sense to specialise, as each branch of the industry will have its own unique requirements. Here are some of the main areas in which security guards can work:
- Corporate security. This will usually involve working in a business setting, ensuring the safety of staff and visitors. This is especially important if lots of high-profile clients visit the premises and owners want to ensure they are well looked after. You will need to be efficient and discreet, willing to keep and industry knowledge that you gain to yourself.
- Public security. You might be involved with working in shopping centres, hospitals, or any other kind of public place where there are lots of people who need protection.
- Events security. This could involve working at events of any size, and might also include nightclub security. You will need to be good at crowd control and handling potentially volatile situations involving people who are under the influence of alcohol.
- Mobile security. You would be working in lots of different areas and may be required to patrol as well.
There are many other functions that a security guard carries out and you may be required to do a number of additional things within your role. It’s an exciting, diverse and challenging career to take on.
