Bomb jammers are devices used to defeat radio controlled improvised explosive devices (RCIED). They are vehicle mounted systems that are therefore highly portable and can be used in many different locations. They have gone through many changes to become the highly sophisticated pieces of equipment that they now are. They consist of radio signal jamming telemetry, or RF radio jammer components.
Jammers may also have other uses, such as blocking mobile phone signals. Some models will only block specific threats, whereas other more sophisticated versions will be able to search for additional threats. During this process, the jammer will perform sweeps to identify additional threats. It will interfere with threats to defeat RCEIDs. The most advanced versions can create an intensive barrage interference within all frequency ranges. However, it will also amplify jamming signals on narrow frequency channels. This means that it will be more effective when used to interfere with walkie talkie or cell phone signals. This is incredibly important in terms of security, as these devices are increasingly being used by terrorists and other threatening organisations.
